Arkansas Children's Hospital Debuts 'Camp Wannaplay'
August 16, 2006 - Little Rock, Arkansas
At some point in time everyone, regardless of age or circumstance, needs an escape to a happier place; a place that is secluded and safe, where they are free to relax. Patients at Arkansas Children's Hospital now have that place in Camp Wannaplay.
Camp Wannaplay is a recently renovated playroom on the third floor of the hospital that provides children with a Room of Magic, allowing them to do what children do best - play. Supporting the hospital-wide theme of "Arkansas - The Natural State," the area has a campground theme and is made up of two oversized artificial Oak trees; murals depicting baby animals in a woodland setting; flooring in a pond theme that includes laminate frogs, fish, turtles and lilly pads; craft tables and chairs resembling tree trunks and a fishing boat sensory table. Patients and their families can spend time together watching movies on the 8-foot Stewart Filmscreen that drops down from the ceiling, take part in arts and craft projects, read books in the hideaway tree space and many other activities.
"Sometimes the best medicine for a child is to simply let them be a child," says Gloriane Kabat, director of the Child Life and Education Department at Arkansas Children's Hospital. "Camp Wannaplay gives children the feeling of a magical woodland experience and helps them forget they're in the hospital. We have patients who are ready to leave the hospital, but they're not ready to leave Camp Wannaplay." The high-tech area can meet the request of any youngster, with a Crestron Control System that operates the Yamaha DLP projector, Yamaha receiver and Sonance 7.1 speaker system, 32-inch LCD Vidikron LCD screens located in the Magic Centers, PC computers, Microsoft XBox 360's, and Yamaha DVD/CD player. The power management is provided by Richard Gray's Power Company.
The project was made possible, in part, with help from the Elf Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 2001 and based in Hollywood, California with a mission of creating rooms of magic for patients at children's hospitals across America. The Elf Foundation serves as a catalyst for the consumer electronics industry, combining the gifts and donations of manufacturers, dealers and enthusiasts and using 94 cents of every dollar donated toward providing private movie theaters in children's hospitals. Camp Wannaplay is the only one of its kind in Arkansas.
"In 2002, I read an article about the Elf Foundation and its mission in an audio/video magazine, and I knew that I had to make this happen at Arkansas Children's Hospital," said Jon-Claude Jenkins, project coordinator and independent volunteer for the project. After meeting with Kabat and realizing the huge need for this project, there was no looking back.
"After seeing the existing playroom I realized, as a parent, that if my own kids were in this hospital, I would want them to have a place where they could leave the reality of being here and fighting illness far behind."
Those involved say it is gratifying to see how a simple change in environment can affect a child's behavior, attitude and outlook and they hope, in some way, they have contributed to a happier visit and a more positive outcome for all of the children who visit this playroom. Approximately 331 patients and 225 visitors come by the playroom each month. Other contributors include the John Boyd Family Endowment for Child Life, Cromwell Architects, Custom Audio and Video of Little Rock, Nabholz Construction and the many donors to the Child Life and Education Department at Arkansas Children's Hospital.
