Elf Foundation Opens 70th Room of Magic Theater
July 15, 2008 -
Iowa City, Iowa - After more than three years of planning, design and integration, a hush fell over the crowd at the dedication of the Elf Foundation’s 70th Room of Magic theater at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. As the ELAN automation system kicked in and the lights dimmed, and the opening movie scenes were projected onto the Stewart Filmscreen motorized 2.35:1 aspect ration film screen from the Runco Relection Series RS-900 digital projector incorporating CineWide™ and CineWide with AutoScope™ technology, and the surround sound system featuring Rotel electronics and B & W speakers brought their powerful message forward, the kids and parents and staff let out an audible gasp as they witnessed the first ever Elf Foundation dedicated CineWide Theater in all of its magical splendor.
The entire system integration and project management was handled on a pro bono basis by Todd Guerrero of Reference Audio Video, the premier custom integration firm in the Iowa market. Another local Iowan, Richard Byrd of Rives Audio, not only donated a full system design specification, but was instrumental in championing the project from its inception.
“I don’t think the audience was prepared for the sheer magnitude of the theater system,” said Doug Weinstein, president of the Elf Foundation. “Not only did the images pop off the screen, in true movie theater aspect ratio, but the sound was equally captivating. It is not exaggerating to say that the entire audience was stunned. And the real magic is that by putting together such an incredible movie experience, we know that for those kids sitting in their wheelchairs and for their parents, they were truly transported away from the daily grind of the hospital experience.”
The theater features a Runco International CineWide™ and CineWide with AutoScope™ technology digital projection system featuring DLP™ technology, providing a vivid high-definition picture, which projects onto a 2.35:1 aspect ratio Stewart Filmscreen motorized film screen employing their exclusive Firehawk screen material. An awesome surround sound system is comprised of Rotel electronics, a B &W 7.2 speaker system, AudioQuest wire and cabling, and Monster power management components. The entire system is controlled with ELAN automation gear, with equipment racking from Middle Atlantic Products and a solid projector mount provided by Chief Manufacturing.
At the end of a tough day, the inpatient population of the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital will have a magical private entertainment experience to relieve some of the boredom and tediousness of their stay. It will be a magical experience that will bring some much needed laughter and joy to a lot of very special kids.
